Its not set in stone, but the friend of a friend seriously wants to buy my Blast
Problem is that this is happening faster than expected so I need to find a new bike very soon because the weather is getting to be real nice!
I really liked the baby Buell, and it was a great bike to learn on, but now that I’ve gotten some miles in the saddle I’m ready for a change. My main complaints were comfort and suspension. I don’t find the ergonomics to be great for any long stints on the bike. The pegs are a little too far forward and the seat shape hurts my ass after about an hour.
I’m after a good all-rounder for commuting, urban/city riding, weekend tours, and spirited twisty-road riding. I also want to try a track day at some point.
So my current first pick is a 2nd gen SV650, the naked one, I’m too much of hipster to go without a round headlight. I’m not opposed to the first gen, but I prefer the looks and fuel injection of the 2nd gen. But damn I can’t seem to find any good ones for sale.
I also just saw this on CL that I’m suddenly interested in.

I’m also interested in the Bonneville, Ducati Scrambler, and Yamaha FZ-07/09, but I’d rather not spend that much.
Budget is in the $2000-4000 range. Any suggestions?

Those Hawks are really nice, my cousin had one for a few years and still regrets selling it 10 years later.
I had a FZ6 that I really enjoyed, a good cruiser and corner carver. Overall I’d say you’re heading in the right direction...something sporty, but not a sports bike.

I expect Pete will chime in here, soon, but the SV sounds like a nice choice, as does the little V-Strom, if you want something a bit taller.
It may sound nuts, but you might also consider a Ulysses. Its a bit more of a jump in power, and a lot in torque, but they are fun all-rounders.

I’ve entertained the idea of a Buell XB9 or XB12, and I love V-twin sport nakeds, but I go back and forth on whether or not I like the styling of the bigger buells

Years ago, I almost got one, a Lightning 12. They are a riot, to be sure, but I wanted something a bit more well-rounded. Wish I had looked for a Ulysses.

That price range poses some challenges. It’s enough to buy a relatively new motorcycle in solid condition, but not enough for you to be able to just go out and get exactly what you want (unless you get lucky). So, you need to have a few bikes in mind, and jump when you find a well-maintained one for a good price.
The FZ-1 comes to mind, the first gen is a little more comfy than the second but is carbureted and probably doesn’t handle quite as well. The FZ-8 could be a good choice as well if you can find one.
You can get any number of decade-old supersports, but comfort is an issue, as is the level of care the previous owner took in maintaining it.
I’d also suggest the Honda VFR, in basically any generation. Kind of a relaxed sport bike, you can tour or hoon on it equally well.
Otherwise, there’s a whole big world of bikes out there. If you don’t mind a heavy motorcycle, there are things like the Kawasaki ZRX, Suzuki Bandit, Honda Blackbird, etc, that aren’t as popular with the two main motorcycle crowds (sportbikes and cruisers) so you can pick them up cheap and get a lot of motorcycle for your money (both literally and figuratively).

On ebay for $3500 buy it now. Do it. Wonderful bike, easy to work on with cheap parts available. Very robust, good fuel economy and it will pretty much go anywhere.... (oh, and with it’s dual exhaust- one of the best sounding bikes ever.) I owned one of these for a few years and yeah... totally brilliant.

My suggestion would be to stay away from the Hawk. I owned one and quickly learned the hard facts about owning a lower production, older bike. When my headlight switch failed, I thought a simple call to my local Honda dealership would have me in good shape. Turns out that part is not only no longer in production, but the 88-89 bikes have a different part from the 90-90 bikes. Took about a month of hard Craigslisting, Ebaying, and calling literally every bike dismantler up and down the west coast. Finally found one, and promptly sold the bike after installing it. I’m not trying to scare you off, just be very aware of the scarcity of parts for some of these older bikes.

I’m not that knowledgeable about bikes but I have briefly driven a Yamaha 750 Seca and quite liked it. It handled well and they’re supposed to be super reliable, and they’re pretty tech heavy for their age.

It’s a Cagiva Gran Canyon— Cagiva is a small boutique builder in Italy- that uses a lot of ducati components/engines etc.. This bike was actually built in the same building alongside Ducati Monsters. And that’s essentially what it is- it’s an off-road ducati monster. (It’s actually the prototype for Duc’s first Multistrada)
But it’s considered one of the most brilliant bikes you’ve never heard of- seriously. And since nobody knows what they are, you can find them for dirt cheap. But like I said, great bike, good fuel economy, a HOOT to drive and overall, really robust...... You should seriously look into it.

Nope, only the CR/R are Rotax. The later 1190s (RX/SX) were Buell-ized big bore Rotax’s. The 1190RR/RS motors have high-end internals. All the earlier models are just variations of Harley motors - 985/1203 Sportster based engines I think.
Random fact: The early XBs have a frame cutout for a turbo charger (Aerochrager) that never got released as a factory option. The Diablo XB12 - 150hp/120ft-lbs.

What about a Bandit? They’ve been made forever so if something breaks you’ll be able to find parts and knowledge on how to get it fixed, and they have a large aftermarket.
You could probably also find a Supermoto in that price range, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Well... the snow on the continental divide might be a bit tough to deal with this early in the season.... But you could prob have it shipped to Ohio for $300-400..... But if you pull the trigger you’re welcome to stop off here in Colorado. (and we can take it and my Cagiva for a romp and stomp up in the hills!)

A cheap 1200 or even a good 600 with a tail bag or even some soft saddlebags would be a great touring bike. Might not be super good at the track, but you could still have fun and learn lots.

SV is a great choice. But you’re right, fuel injected ones that aren’t trashed don’t come up for sale cheap or often.
